• This idea came from Zach Lieberman. He does this exercise at the start of every session of School of Poetic Computation in New York.

1. Review of oFBook image processing chapter.

• Today we are going to be exploring the field of Computer Vision.
• Let's review the ofBook image processing chapter, up to "Thresholding".
• Throughout these lectures we'll be drawing on Kyle McDonald's cv-examples.

2. Breaking up images into different parts.

• Binary Images are used widely in Computer Vision to select areas of interest.
• One way of producing a Binary Image is to Threshold a Greyscale image (or a R,G,B channel)
• Image segmentation is the technical term for breaking up an image into different areas of meaning.
• Average Brightness example. You could use this to detect the brightness of a room.
• Thresholding example.
• Edge detection example.
• What else could you use these examples for?

3. Finding differences between frames of video.

• Moving from analysing single images to the differences between frames allows a variety of new features to be detected.
• Background Subtraction.
• Frame Difference.
• Motion History.
• What else could you use these examples for?

4. A favourite technique: Slit-Scan.
